Artist’s Statement

(My Philosophy of Art)

“The meaning of life is to find your gift.

The purpose of life is to give it away.”

-  Pablo Picasso

From the moment I could pick up a crayon and make colorful marks on a page, I discovered my love of art.  While still a preschooler, it was my mother who first recognized my artistic talent.  My favorite comic strip was Charles Schulz’s Peanuts.  I drew a picture of Charlie Brown and Snoopy one day at the kitchen table.  At first, because it was so perfectly rendered, Mom thought I traced it.  Then she realized it was larger in scale which confirmed that I did, in fact, draw it!  All I know is that I always loved art and wanted to be an artist.  Being an artist is a part of what makes me the best version of myself.

An outstanding artist loves art, has a passion for it, demonstrates excellence in creating artwork, and shares the gift of artistic talent with others.  An outstanding artist is first a keen observer of nature and life.  An outstanding artist inspires others to see, touch, and feel the beauty in the natural environment, and helps them recognize that art is everywhere.  Art can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone.

Art mirrors life, and art helps the artist gain confidence in her ability to work through life challenges.  There is a solution to every challenge and every perceived challenge can be transformed into a positive learning experience.  Art is therapeutic.

An outstanding artist seeks to interact with peers to receive valuable feedback that can be used to improve work executed in the future.

An excellent artist understands the role of the artist throughout history within social, economic, political, and technological contexts.  Great artists are able to see and understand art’s permanence and relevance above and beyond art history also.  The outstanding artist is able to communicate, through her work, the important role of art in human history and in the future.

An outstanding artist understands and adapts to changes with regard to the tools and materials used in the studio.  Art materials and technology constantly evolve and the artist must recognize and understand how to adopt new materials, technologies, and methods.  It is a necessary survival skill in a world where technology is constantly evolving, changing, and becoming evermore complex.

That being said, an outstanding artist is a lifelong learner who is consistently practices her craft and strives to learn and master new methods and mediums.

An outstanding artist is engaged outside of the studio and in the community, perhaps by creating a mural at the local library or by assisting the elderly with a craft project at a local nursing home.

Last, but not least, an outstanding artist has fun with the creative process.  It is important to create art and enjoy art for art’s sake.

All of the above contribute to the artist’s desire to become the best artist she can be as well as the best version of herself.
